Pelecypod

Upper Mississippian Chainman Shale, California

Here's a pelecypod specimen, genus Caneyella, from the Upper Mississippian Chainman Shale, collected in the vicinity of Cerro Gordo. Notice how both valves have been preserved, splayed open along the hinge-line on the slightly metamorphosed 325-million-year-old chunk of shale; combined, both valves together measure 28 millimeters in diameter.
