Paleobotanical Field Trip To Sailor Flat, California

David Lawler (left) instructs the group on what we need to know about how to proceed with the dig. Note the two small stakes in the ground,  topped by reddish flags; these mark the perimeters of three by three foot squares. Group members paired off and carefully excavated each specified roped-off area marked by one of those flags (each flag held a locality number that went into the permanent registry of fossil plant localities at the UC Museum of Paleontology).
