These are "cabbage" accumulations of calcium carbonate, limestone, precipitated by algae in the Middle Pliocene Coso Formation; specimen at top is roughly 12.5 centimeters wide. "Cabbage" algae development in middle image is about 20 centimeters long. The specimen at bottom is approximately 22 centimeters long. All three were collected long before the Coso Range Wilderness had been created. |
