The Middlegate Formation Fossil Flora Locality, Nevada

The view is roughly northeastward to the whitish-colored Middlegate Formation in the distance. From this perspective, the low, rounded, rather nondescript hills lie approximately two miles away. The Middlegate Formation contains fine-grained cream-white to pale brownish opaline shales that produce a genuine bonanza of beautifully preserved middle Miocene plant remains some 16 million years ancient.
