Several dry washes and gullies penetrate the late Middle Miocene DoveSpring Formation immediately northwest of the campground at Red Rock Canyon State Park, California. The more massive, reddish-brown strata near skyline are river and stream-deposited sandstones; along the lower slopes, the greenish-brown strata are lake and stream-deposited mudstones and siltstones that bear sporadic occurrences of vertebrate fossils. Fossil collecting is of course not allowed in Red Rock Canyon State Park, except by special permit issued solely to qualified, trained scientists with a degree from an accredited university. |
