Here's a view along one of the many dry washes and gullies that lie immediately northwest of the campground at Red Rock Canyon State Park, California, to exposures of the late Middle Miocene Dove Spring Formation. The cliffs are composed of river and stream-deposited sandstones; greenish-brown hills along lower slopes and in the foreground are bone-bearing mudstones and siltstones deposited in lakes and streams. Of course, fossil collecting is not allowed in Red Rock Canyon State Park, except by special permit issued by the California State Parks authorities to fully qualified, trained scientists with a degree from an accredited university whose research projects can be verified and authenticated by independent investigators. |
