The Visitor Center At Red Rock Canyon State Park

Kern County, California

A display case inside the Red RockCanyon State Park Visitor Center; shown here is a series of increasingly larger-sized camel ankle bones (called an astragalus in anatomical terminology) collected from the late Miocene Dove Spring Formation at Red Rock Canyon State Park--each ankle bone came from a different species of camel that walked the shores of lakes and streams during ancestral Red Rock Canyon times some 10 million years ago.
